¡°The one who conquers the sea will become the ruler of an empire¡±
Jang Bogo, the emperor of the sea trader
who dreamt of building a great marine
empire a millennium ago. He was a man of the world and the future
who became the only figure freely sailing
the borderless ocean in our nation¡¯s
history, exploring the sea route to Dang
Dynasty, Japan and further to the Arabian
Sea, and transforming the Cheoghaejin
into the hub of the trade in the Northeastern
Region. But Kim, Boo-sik,
the writer of ¡°the Chronicles of the
Three States¡±, described him as betrayer
who had plotted rebellion. In
¡°the Heritage of the Three States¡±, Jang
Bogo was quoted as a lowly seaman who
rebelled against the king,
but was eventually killed by Yeomjang
in obedience to a royal command. Though
the history generally
tends to be written just in favor of
the winners, it can only be said that
it is too partial and unfair to
depict Jang Bogo as a mere mean betrayer
and a loser in the history. The drama
is intended to cope
with such a distorted historical standpoint,
and to portray Jang Bogo¡¯s diehard character
and his life
full of ups and downs, thereby inspiring
a challenging spirit and hope toward
the future for the coming
generation, who will be playing a leading
role in building a hub nation in the
Northeast Region
in the 21st century. |
